Festive Acts of Kindness
Every Monday lunchtime Mrs Richards runs Kindness Club, an extra-curricular club that encourages feelings of wellbeing with the aim of helping improve ourselves and our community. Students are encouraged to engage with activities that focus on the five ways to well-being - learning new skills, connecting with other people, giving and volunteering, physical activity and mindfulness.
In the run up to Christmas and with giving in mind, the Kindness Club tasked approximately 100 students with the thoughtful and mindful activity of sending handwritten cards to residents of local care homes. Students wrote about various things such as school life, their favourite subjects, the telling of jokes, and asking residents questions about their families and Christmas memories.
Writing to the residents proved to be both an enjoyable and reflective experience for the students and we’ve been delighted to hear how well received the cards were by the residents. We’ve received some lovely feedback from the care homes with Clarendon Lodge commenting that the residents ‘loved them’ and Villa Scalabrini remarking that their residents were ‘overwhelmed at the beautiful messages and wishes’.
Our Kindness Club students' next project will be a visit to Chorleywood Beaumont Care Home in February during Feeling Good Week. They will be spending time outdoors with residents to take part in an intergenerational gardening and crafting project that will focus on all aspects of the five ways to wellbeing for both the students and the residents.
