School Iftar Success at Croxley Danes

We were delighted with the success of our first ever Croxley Danes School iftar last month, held on the last day of term to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. An iftar is the most important meal of the day during Ramadan as it’s the meal that follows a whole day of fasting and is often seen as an opportunity to create an interfaith gathering with delicious food, friends, and conversation.

Taking inspiration from a tweet she saw regarding an iftar being held at a school in London, Mrs Richards, the Croxley Danes Equalities Coordinator, set to work to coordinate and organise the same for Croxley Danes. With her passion for making our school a genuinely welcoming place which celebrates everyone, it was incredible to host over 70 parents and students of all faiths to this wonderful event.

Mrs Khan, the Croxley Danes Islamic Society leader, welcomed everyone saying, ‘We really do have an outstanding turnout this evening, which emphasises our sense of school community. It's amazing to see so many of you take time out of your evening to come along, and what’s even lovelier is to see those of you who aren’t Muslim join us, support us and be eager to learn about the spirit and blessings of Ramadan.’

After listening to the Adhan - the Muslim call to prayer, guests were invited to break their fasts with dates and water and those who wanted to took part in Iftar prayers. Following this we all got to enjoy the fabulous variety of food that was brought along, from biryani, pakoras, bhajis, spring rolls, pasta bakes and Dr Bhatt’s delicious pani puri! For desert we enjoyed Maryama in Year 10’s homemade ‘brookies’ (a brownie cookie hybrid!) along with fruit, cakes and muffins.

The afternoon proved to be a wonderful school community event with Yousuf, our inaugural Head Boy, addressing the guests. In his speech, he emphasised how Ramadan is not only about fasting, but also about becoming better people. Being part of the inaugural year group, he expressed how he has witnessed the school grow and is looking forward to seeing how it continues to do so along with its traditions, and that community events like this iftar are a prime example of how the traditions at Croxley Danes have flourished. Yousuf said he felt fortunate to be part of organising the iftar with Mrs Khan saying how ‘The community feel at the iftar was incredible - it was amazing to see so many people come together to help out and enjoy this event. I look forward to returning to Croxley Danes and attending future iftars!’

We were also privileged to hear from Imaan, Halimah, Zahra and Maham, four of our very own Islamic Society and Ramadan Club regulars, who spoke so eloquently about what Ramadan means to them. We are grateful to them for being so open and generous with their words and time and are so proud to have such confident students who shared of themselves so honestly and gave us such a valuable insight into their life and faith.

Mrs Richards gave a final few words, thanking all the staff involved, students and parents for coming together at short notice and creating such a wonderful community evening of celebration. A special thank you was given to the wonderful efforts of Mrs Khan, the Islamic Society Leader who was integral in the organisation of the event.

Ramadan Club was a daily Islamic Society calm and food-free space for students to come and be together and it was during these sessions that the bulk of planning took place for the school iftar.

We are already looking forward to celebrating Ramadan 2025 with next year’s Croxley Danes School iftar!
