Inspiring Students Through STEM at Big Bang Fair

Last week, selected students were invited by the Maths faculty to attend the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham. At the fair students were given the opportunity to attend theatre shows, visit interactive stands and workshops, view inspiring science and engineering projects and find out more about possible careers.

Maya S in Year 8 wrote the following review about the day.:

‘On Friday the 21st of June, myself and fellow students from Croxley Danes in years 7 and 8 attended the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham. It was held in the  National Exhibition Centre and the purpose was to inspire young people about science and engineering and also to raise awareness about problems around the globe that can be solved with STEM skills.

The fair was buzzing with many different pop up stalls with activities and challenges that covered many topics including energy and transport, health and wellbeing and technology and innovation. There were even live interactive shows, and many yummy food stalls. I enjoyed visiting the specsavers workshop, I knew it would be worth it from the queue that snaked around it - don’t worry as it did quickly move.  We got to experience how it would feel to have certain eye conditions such as cataracts by wearing specially designed glasses. We then had to guide a ball through a maze with these glasses on, it was quite difficult. It felt special to be able to empathise with people who do have eye conditions, especially my grandmother who herself has cataracts. We also got to play around with machines that opticians and ear doctors would use and when we had finished I was pleased to receive a goody bag!

All of the staff were really warm and welcoming and were really happy and eager to answer any questions to help deepen our knowledge. They asked us our opinion about certain issues such as plastic pollution and I really felt I had a say. I learnt many different skills that I would need in future jobs such as financial problem solving.

The trip was really entertaining as we got to be independent walking around the fair ourselves.’
