Philosothon
On behalf of the Religious, Ethical and Philosophical Studies department, on 31st January six students from Years 10 and 12 were invited to attend and participate in a ‘Philosothon’ that took place at Northwood College. Students received training on how to engage in a philosophical enquiry, and then competed against teams from other schools in a philosophical enquiry on two different stimuli.
We are delighted that our students who attended came third place out of 50 schools that attended. We were pipped to second place by only 0.4 points by Putney High School for Girls and Watford Boys School who were the overall winners. (It’s worth mentioning that we beat the Harrow School as well as Northwood College and St Helens).
Leila W (10G) gained an individual mention in summation as an excellent philosopher and speaker (one of only three individual mentions from the 50 or so attendees), and one of the visiting philosophy professors and judges were very impressed with Haydon K, Angela C and Brandon C (who was offered a job as a question writer at a Philosophy magazine - in jest.... perhaps). Their ability to not only speak but to listen and “respond to others relevantly” was praised by the judges.
Our Year 12 students, Maddy G and Finn C really held their own against four very polished and convincing Harrow Boys orators. The students represented our school tremendously well, and we are very proud of them.
