Students’ Campaign Film to be Shown at Earth Day Youth Summit
As part of an ongoing project since 2022, a number of Year 10 and 11 students, along with Mrs Haacke from the Humanities faculty, have been involved in a project delivered by environmental charity Global Action Plan.
With the worrying statistic that the average 14 year old is estimated to be shown up to 1,260 adverts every day on social media alone, students were inspired to build a youth-led campaign which tackles the ‘buy now get next day’ culture, that puts young people under increasing pressure by advertisers and online platforms to over consume, whilst also having their privacy invaded through surveillance advertising.
The campaign group currently awaits the responses from online retailers and local government to their campaign wishes - asking for the Government to ban surveillance advertising to anyone under 18, as many young people feel violated by the unwanted invasion of their privacy by companies driven by the need for profit.
The students have been involved in numerous workshops where they have had the opportunity to be trained in marketing, campaigning, writing social media posts, manifesto creation, storyboarding and film making. This has led to a thought provoking campaign film being created that our students helped plan, storyboard and write alongside Global Action Plan and the film makers Nice and Serious. The film created is being shown at the ‘Transform Our World’ Youth Summit on Earth Day, Monday 22nd April which is incredibly exciting!
The film is available to watch here. Croxley Danes students will also be incorporating the work completed by the campaign group as part of their wider learning on Earth Day.
Well done to all the students involved in delivering such an important message.
