Students Attend Parliamentary Action Day
Earlier this month, our Send My Friend to School Campaign Champions, Rebecca and Amaya in Year 10 spent time training and visiting Parliament to meet with MPs, lords and civil servants, and share their passion for global education and the urgent need for support.
Amaya tells us more about this fantastic experience below -
On Monday 11th November, Rebecca and I travelled to central London with Miss Bhalla where we met up with our fellow cohort of Campaign Champions on our journey to Parliament. We arrived at the venue for the training day and got settled in with a debrief and a run-through of our parliamentary action day taking place the next day.
As evening approached, we walked to YHA London Central where we would be staying for the night to have pizza, relax and rest before the long day awaiting us!
We woke bright and early the next morning at 6:30am and headed down to breakfast before walking to the station to catch a train to Westminster.
We arrived through the entrance and then were greeted by an MP who toured us around Parliament, the House of Lords and we even got to see the House of Commons Public Gallery later on!
We met with Anneliese Dodds (Minister for Equalities and Women's Education) and got to ask her questions before having an insightful discussion with civil servants who worked in the same department.
At 4pm, we set up a room for the MP drop-ins. The drop-ins were exciting and insightful as we got to speak to people who were really interested to see what we had to say about education and solutions towards it.
Myself and Rebecca were really fortunate to be two of the four students who also got to visit 10 Downing street and knock on the door to hand in our petition letter. It was a really good experience and we got to take loads of pictures.
Unfortunately our day ended here and we took the train home. This was a really fun and exciting once-in-a-lifetime experience that me and Rebecca were so fortunate to have and a day we’ll remember
