Celebrating LGBT+ History Month at Croxley Danes
Our Equalities Team and Safe Space group hosted a powerful assembly today to mark LGBT+ History Month, focusing on the theme of Activism and Allyship. LGBT+ History Month, celebrated every February in the UK since 2004, highlights the history of LGBT+ individuals and the ongoing fight for equality, especially following the repeal of Section 28, which had previously prohibited the promotion of homosexuality in schools.
The theme for this year highlights Activism and Allyship, celebrating influential figures and the vital role allies play in supporting the LGBT+ community. Students were introduced to trailblazers such as Annie Kenney, an early suffragette who defied gender norms; Ivor Cummings, a mixed-race, gay civil servant who supported the Windrush generation; and Charlie Kiss, the first trans man to stand for UK Parliament.
The assembly also highlighted the importance of allies, with figures such as Tao Xu from Heartstopper and Emma Watson championing LGBT+ rights in both personal and public spheres. Students were encouraged to reflect on their own roles as allies, advocating for inclusivity and standing up against discrimination.
As part of our ongoing commitment to inclusivity, we invited students to take part in initiatives such as the Safe Space Survey and Allyship Pledge. These initiatives are crucial for understanding the needs of our LGBT+ community and ensuring that everyone at Croxley Danes feels supported and valued.
We warmly encourage all members of the Croxley Danes community—students, staff, and parents—to complete the Safe Space Survey during LGBT+ History Month. Your responses will help us continue to create a welcoming environment for all. The survey link can be found in the latest school newsletters, or you can ask your children to join the Safe Space Google Classroom. For more information, please contact Ms Tomarchio.
We also invite LGBT+ students and their allies to join our Safe Space Lunchtime Club every Tuesday in L1. This is an opportunity to come together, build a stronger community, and show our commitment to inclusivity.
Let’s continue to celebrate diversity, stand together in solidarity, and work for equality, today and always.
