07th MarchCroxley Danes on BBC1’s The One Show!
We were delighted to welcome The One Show to Croxley Danes School last month as presenter Angellica Bell and the camera crew visited to learn more about our students’ participation in Hertfordshire University’s pioneering BootStRaP project for a feature on the show which aired last night!
This Europe-wide study is investigating the impact of internet use on young people’s mental health, and we are proud to be playing an active role in this important research. BootStRaP (Boosting Societal Adaptation and Mental Health in a Rapidly Digitalising, Post-Pandemic Europe), is a five-year project aiming to recruit up to 10,000 young people from across Europe. Led by the University of Hertfordshire, the study seeks to understand how young people use the internet, identify behaviours that may lead to harm, and explore ways to mitigate these risks.
As part of the research, students have been using a mobile app called BootstrApp, which tracks internet usage patterns and gathers insights through questions about health, wellbeing, mood, and online activity. The findings will help researchers develop a clearer picture of how young people from different countries and backgrounds engage with the internet daily.
Headteacher Andy Harris expressed his enthusiasm for the school’s involvement:
“While we have strong systems in place to manage phone and internet use during school hours, we recognise that online habits outside of school can significantly impact young people’s mental health and relationships. We see our participation in the BootStRaP project as an invaluable opportunity to contribute to research that will help shape better strategies for online safety and wellbeing, ensuring our students are equipped to navigate the digital world responsibly.”
We are incredibly proud of our students for taking part in such a vital initiative, and we look forward to seeing how this research can help inform policies and practices to support young people’s wellbeing across Europe.
